Seasonal Flu Shots in Dedham, MA

Flu season is nearly here, and getting a flu shot is the most effective way to prevent contracting the virus. Flu shots are available at AFC Urgent Care Dedham seven days a week this fall for patients of all ages on a walk-in basis.

Should I get a flu shot?

The flu shot is recommended for most patients over six months old, with exceptions being patients with egg allergies and patients who had negative reactions to past flu shots. If you have an egg allergy, consult with your physician prior to getting a flu shot about potential alternatives to influenza prevention. Certain people may be more at-risk for complications or more severe symptoms stemming from the virus and should get the vaccine early in the season, including:

  • Pregnant women
  • Patients with compromised immune systems
  • Senior citizens
  • Patients with chronic health conditions
  • Young children

Consult with your physician about when to get your flu shot. It is recommended for most patients between September and mid-October.

How does the flu shot provide immunity?

The flu shot exposes your body to a diluted strain of the influenza virus, allowing your immune system to create antibodies to fight against it. The antibodies will automatically fight against the active virus if exposed, providing you with immunity against the current strain. The flu vaccine is effective for about six months, which is why it is critical to get an updated shot each year for continued protection. It takes about two weeks for the antibodies to form, during which time it is possible to contract the virus. It is recommended to get the vaccine early in order to avoid potential exposure without immunity.
