AFC Urgent Care Dedham is now offering the Abbott ID NOW COVID-19 test, a rapid molecular test that allows your physician to test a sample and provide you with results in 15 minutes. The test is available under emergency use authorization from the FDA. Rapid COVID-19 testing is available seven days a week to patients at AFC Urgent Care Dedham by appointment only.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Symptoms of the novel coronavirus include:
- Dry cough
- Head and full body aches
- High fever of over 102 F
- Shortness of breath
How does the rapid COVID-19 test work?
A swab is taken of your upper respiratory tract to collect a sample for testing. The sample is then brought to our on-site lab, where it is mixed with a specific solution. The solution breaks apart the virus, exposing its genetic material. The agents used to create the solution ignore any virus present besides COVID-19, and recognize the specific genome in the virus. The genome is replicated from targeted molecules, which detects the virus. After the test is complete, the results are delivered via a screen on the testing machine as well as printed. Results will be returned to patients the same day as they are tested.
What are the benefits of rapid testing?
Rapid testing allows patients to receive their results the same day, providing you with peace of mind and the knowledge of your COVID-19 status. If you have a positive result, you should immediately begin self-isolating from others and contacting anyone you have been in contact with to get tested. If you have a negative result, you should continue following local health and safety guidelines including wearing a mask in public and practicing social distancing, maintaining a distance of at least six feet between yourself and others who do not live with you.
