Spring Allergies

Spring is two days away, technically. Does not exactly feel like it though. The arrival of spring also means the arrival of seasonal spring allergies for over 35 million Americans.

Allergies occur when pollen enters a person and the immune system mistakes it for a foreign organism such as bacteria or a virus. The immune system triggers a response which causes the symptoms of a runny nose, itchy watery eyes, and sneezing. The higher the pollen counts, the more a person with allergies suffers.

If you experience these symptoms yearly in the spring, it is highly likely you have seasonal allergies. Your doctor or an allergist can perform a skin test to see what exactly you are allergic to. To alleviate symptoms, you can use many over the counter medicines such as antihistamines, decongestants, eye drops, and nasal sprays. A doctor can prescribe stronger medicines if necessary.
